About Me

If you would like updates about me please email me to add you to my mailing list!!

My name is Judit Matthews ( Judit Sandor). I was born in Szeged, in Hungary in 1975. After leaving school I came to England as an au-pair in my gap year in 1994. I met Jim, who is now my husband. We have two children Harry and Emma.

I am an illustrative artist working in my studio in Banstead. My subject matter ranges from quirky illustrated maps to abstract landscapes with lots of little creatures, animals and figures. I love pattern and colour. I use acrylics, ink with a dip pen and some oil pastels and collage too. I don't try to be realistic, I like to break things down, simplify them. Most of my work has a naive feel. I don't pay attention to scale or colour of the real thing.

I have  taken part in Channel 4's Watercolour Challenge in 2001. My artwork was displayed at The Mall Gallery in 2002. I have also done some book illustrations which were published in Hungary. My work has appeared in The artist and The Leisure painter magazines. Currently I am the member of the Tadworth Art Group, we have 2 exhibitions annually- May and November. I won the Surrey Life magazin's Landscape painter of the year in 2017;also most recently I have got into the top 10 of the art competition ran by Sheengate Publishing for the Richmond Magazine. This competition was judged by Ken Howard. In 2017 I got into the annual exhibition of the Society of Women Artists in The Mall Galleries.

These days my favourite mediums are  pen and ink sometimes with watercolour wash and acrylic on paper or acrylics with ink and oil pastels on woodblock. I love the vibrancy of the colours you can achieve with acrylic paints and inks. I also do some wall murals for children.

I run monthly art workshops in my home studio. Contact me if you are interested!
